The initiative, led by the University of Barcelona with the support of the Surfrider Foundation, works with the objective of assessing the microplastic pollution in the sea.<\/p>\n<section class=\"article-section\"><div class=\"container\">\n\n<\/div><\/section>\n<p>With this aim, the members of the Club carry out a fortnightly collection of samples while going on a kayak or a stand up paddle along the section that follows the l\u2019Escala coast.<\/p>\n<section class=\"article-section\"><div class=\"container\">\n\n<\/div><\/section>\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">The Surfing for Science project has received an honourable mention at the first European Union Citizen Science awards.<\/h3>\n<section class=\"article-section\"><div class=\"container\">\n\n<\/div><\/section>\n<p>The samples obtained, also thanks to the Fundaci\u00f3 Alive, are sent to the University where they are analysed in order to detect the amount and type of microplastics present.<\/p>\n<section class=\"article-section\"><div class=\"container\">\n\n<\/div><\/section>\n<p>The first data received on the magnitude of the microplastic pollution in two different areas of the Catalan and Basque coasts can be consulted at the following <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/litter.shinyapps.io\/surfingforscience2\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">link<\/a>. <\/strong>The virtual app allows you to select the year, the area, the values to be plotted, the units, the tracks recorded by the participants and also the distribution of microplastics by size, categories and colours, amongst other things.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Don\u2019t miss the environmental conference on 14th July to learn more about the threat of micro plastics and how the initiative Surfing for Science is working to better understand it together with the collaboration of the Club.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"featured_media":42579,"parent":0,"template":"","news-categories":[954],"news-tags":[],"class_list":["post-55032","news","type-news","status-publish","has-post-thumbnail","hentry","news-categories-environment"],"acf":[],"yoast_head":"<!-- This site is optimized with the Yoast SEO Premium plugin v20.7 (Yoast SEO v27.4) - https:\/\/yoast.com\/product\/yoast-seo-premium-wordpress\/ -->\n<title>Microplastics, a global problem &#8211;
