{"id":99640,"date":"2026-05-02T16:19:54","date_gmt":"2026-05-02T14:19:54","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/nauticescala.com\/?post_type=news&#038;p=99640"},"modified":"2026-05-02T16:34:39","modified_gmt":"2026-05-02T14:34:39","slug":"lateen-sail-gathering-sa-rata-centenary","status":"publish","type":"news","link":"https:\/\/nauticescala.com\/en\/news\/lateen-sail-gathering-sa-rata-centenary\/","title":{"rendered":"L\u2019Escala has celebrated the centenary of the sardinal \u201cSa Rata\u201d"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p>Club N\u00e0utic L\u2019Escala organized on <strong>Saturday, 2 May 2026<\/strong> the <strong>Lateen Sail Gathering \u2013 100th anniversary of \u201cSa Rata\u201d<\/strong>, a very special event dedicated to the preservation and celebration of Mediterranean maritime heritage.<\/p>\n<section class=\"article-section\"><div class=\"container\">\n\n<\/div><\/section>\n<p>The gathering brought together <strong>19 lateen sail boats from Catalonia, the Balearic Islands and Northern Catalonia<\/strong>, with the participation of around <strong>150 people<\/strong>, including sailors, crews, families and sea enthusiasts, who filled the coastline of L\u2019Escala throughout the entire morning.<\/p>\n<section class=\"article-section\"><div class=\"container\">\n\n<\/div><\/section>\n<p>The event was held on the occasion of the centenary of the sardinal \u201cSa Rata\u201d, a wooden vessel built in <strong>1926 in Banyuls de la Marenda (Northern Catalonia)<\/strong> by master shipwright Colomina, and restored in <strong>1989 at the Sala Shipyards in L\u2019Escala<\/strong> by master shipwright Salvador Feliu.<\/p>\n<section class=\"article-section\"><div class=\"container\">\n\n<\/div><\/section>\n<p>Throughout the day, the legacy of this centenary vessel was highlighted. As recalled by her owner, Emili Armengol, she has been \u201c<strong>sailing for 100 years, and always sailing<\/strong>\u201d.<\/p>\n<section class=\"article-section\"><div class=\"container\">\n\n<\/div><\/section>    <figure class=\"image-banner\">\t\n\t\t<img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/nauticescala.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/05\/2026-nauticescala-vela-llatina-35.jpg\" alt=\"\" \/>\n\t<\/figure><!-- end image-banner -->\n<section class=\"article-section\"><div class=\"container\">\n\n<\/div><\/section>\n<p><\/p>\n<section class=\"article-section\"><div class=\"container\">\n\n<\/div><\/section>\n<p>During the gathering, the lateen sails created an evocative and highly symbolic image along the coast of L\u2019Escala, offering a unique opportunity to connect with maritime history, share knowledge across generations and enjoy traditional sailing as a community.<\/p>\n<section class=\"article-section\"><div class=\"container\">\n\n<\/div><\/section>\n<p>Lateen sailing, beyond being a sailing technique, is a living expression of Mediterranean culture and a testimony to the historic relationship between coastal communities and the sea.<\/p>\n<section class=\"article-section\"><div class=\"container\">\n\n<\/div><\/section>\n<p>Through this initiative, Club N\u00e0utic L\u2019Escala has reaffirmed its commitment to the preservation, promotion and transmission of this maritime heritage, considered a cultural asset of the highest organisations<\/strong><\/p>\n<section class=\"article-section\"><div class=\"container\">\n\n<\/div><\/section>\n<p>The Lateen Sail Gathering was made possible thanks to the collaboration and support of several institutions and organisations committed to maritime and cultural heritage:<\/p>\n<section class=\"article-section\"><div class=\"container\">\n\n<\/div><\/section>\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>L\u2019Escala Town Council<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Friends of Lateen Sailing Association of L\u2019Escala<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Ports de la Generalitat<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Anchovy and Salt Museum<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Catalan Federation for Maritime and Fluvial Culture and Heritage<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<section class=\"article-section\"><div class=\"container\">\n\n<\/div><\/section>\n<p>The support of these institutions has strengthened the shared commitment to give visibility to lateen sailing, encourage its practice and ensure the continuity of this legacy for future generations.<\/p>\n<section class=\"article-section\"><div class=\"container\">\n\n<\/div><\/section>\n<p>With this commemorative gathering, Club N\u00e0utic L\u2019Escala has consolidated L\u2019Escala as a reference space for traditional maritime culture, and invites the public to experience an authentic event, full of tradition, emotion and respect for our maritime
