Get back on the water safely this spring

At the beginning of March, many boats return to the water after weeks or months of little activity. The arrival of good weather and the first days of spring make it an ideal moment to resume sailing, but it is also when extra precautions are needed: a proper inspection and careful planning of the trip are key to enjoying the sea safely.

If your boat has been inactive during winter, it is highly advisable to carry out a full check before your first outing of the season. Make sure to review:

    • Valid documentation and insurance.
    • Complete and accessible safety equipment.
    • Operational VHF radio and communication devices.
    • Condition of hull, deck and electrical installation.
    • Battery charge.
    • Engine and transmission elements.
    • On‑board systems (water, toilets and bilge).
If you prefer to delegate this preparation, Varador l’Escala and the Club’s partner nautical companies can assist you in getting everything ready for the new season.

Much of maritime safety is decided before leaving the harbour. Before your first spring outing, remember to:

  • Review your route, anchoring points and shelter ports.
  • Check the weather forecast.
  • Inform someone you trust of your navigation plan.
  • Estimate fuel consumption and leave with a safety margin.
  • Respect maximum capacity and distribute weight properly.
  • Keep VHF channel 16 open.
  • Remove fenders before navigation.
These simple routines help prevent incidents and make sailing much more enjoyable.
