Today, Tuesday, April 1st, the registrations for MedFoto, the first international photography contest of the Mediterranean, have opened. MedFoto 2025 thus continues its commitment to the preservation of the marine environment and awareness through photography.
The fifth edition of the contest organized by Fundació Alive and Club Nàutic l’Escala begins its journey with the incorporation of a new category and two new special awards. The jury, on the other hand, is renewed with the contributions of two new members.
Authors can submit their best proposals until May 15th.
The open nature of MedFoto is reinforced this year with the launch of the new Popular category. This category, which replaces the previous Mobile division, not only accepts photographs taken with a mobile phone but also includes proposals made with other photographic devices, obtaining a jpeg or analog file. The contest thus becomes more accessible to all formats to reach all photography enthusiasts regardless of their level or preferences when shooting.
The Popular category joins those already proposed by the contest: Landscape, Wildlife, Sports and Leisure, Sea Trades, Underwater, Conservation and Climate Change, and Photographic Story. MedFoto thus encompasses all aspects of the Mediterranean Sea under a common theme: The sea and the people.
Candidates can submit up to 15 photographs distributed in any of the proposed divisions between April 1st and May 15th through the MedFoto website to compete for one of the contest’s awards.
This 2025, MedFoto will once again distribute up to 4,000 euros in cash prizes among the overall winning image and the winners of each contest category.
It will also introduce up to four special awards with the incorporation of the Young Talents and Comic Nature recognitions. The first will award a 200 € voucher for photographic material to the best author under 21 years old, while the second, courtesy of the Friends of the Aiguamolls and the natural heritage of Empordà (AAPNE), will reward the most unusual or funny proposal in the Wildlife or Underwater categories with a basket of Empordà products, a hotel night, and a one-year subscription to the association.
Once again, the best image taken within the geographical limits of the Costa Brava will be recognized, winning a weekend in a bungalow at Camping la Ballena Alegre for four people. The winner of the L’Escala division will enjoy a very special experience in L’Escala for two people. This includes a hotel night with breakfast, a lunch or dinner, and a visit to the Anchovy and Salt Museum or the Alfolí de la Sal – L’Escala Museum.
The task of selecting the best photographs will be carried out by a jury of experts in photography and the marine environment, which this year is renewed with the incorporation of photographers Adriana Olsina and David Salcedo. Laura Carrau, Oriol Alamany, and Xavier Salvador complete the jury.
The winning authors will be announced at a ceremony to be held on Saturday, July 26th at Club Nàutic L’Escala. The event will mark the beginning of the exhibition of the winning and finalist photographs of the fifth edition of MedFoto, which can be visited at the Boardroom of the sports club until August 26th.
MedFoto is an initiative born from the collaboration between Club Nàutic l’Escala and Fundació Alive, aiming to highlight the fragile relationship between people and the sea, as well as to promote the natural values of the marine environment and encourage responsible behavior among all agents operating in the marine world and the general public. Through the collection and dissemination of visual material from the contest, MedFoto works to contribute to the knowledge and preservation of the marine environment.
In this edition, the contest, validated by the Spanish Association of Nature Photographers (AEFONA), is supported by Ports de la Generalitat, the City Council of l’Escala, AAPNE, Empordà Turisme, Camping La Ballena Alegre, Festival Portalblau, and Improcat.
