Anchoring in the Natural Parks of Cap de Creus, Montgrí, the Medes Islands and the Cargol of l’Escala

  • Category: Environment

On August 14th, the new Management and Use Plan for the Cap de Creus Natural Park comes into effect. The regulations introduce important changes regarding speed and anchoring that should be taken into account.

As usual, anchoring is regulated in certain areas of the Montgrí, Medes Islands and Baix Ter Natural Park, as well as in some parts of l’Escala, with the aim of protecting the seagrass (Posidonia) meadows along the Costa Brava.

During the busiest months for boating, mooring buoys will be available so you can enjoy the sea while respecting the environment.

From August 14th, 2025, with the entry into force of the Management and Use Plan for the Cap de Creus Natural Park, important changes will be introduced affecting navigation, anchoring, and marine activities in the area.

We highlight those related to speed and anchoring:

    • Free anchoring is allowed, except:
      • Inside the buoy fields located in Montjoi, La Pelosa, Jóncols, Taballera and Rostella.
      • In the no-anchoring zones of Cala Murtra, Cala Jugadora and Cala Galladera, once the delimiting buoys are installed.
      • In all cases, damage to Posidonia meadows must be avoided.
    • Maximum navigation speeds in the Park are:
      • General maximum speed: 12 knots
      • Maximum speed within 300 m of the coast: 5 knots
      • Additionally, according to coastal law, within 50 meters of the coast: maximum 3 knots

Between the months of July and September, anchoring is not allowed in the area of El Cargol de l’Escala and it is necessary to do so using only the field of day-use buoys enabled with capacity for boats of up to 12 meters. These buoys are free to use.

The buoy field offers:

    • Blue buoys for boats under 8 m length.
    • White buoys for boats under 12 m length.

Once the buoys are removed, anchoring will be allowed as long as the posidonia is not affected.

From the 1st of June to the 30th of September, Cala Montgó has a field of buoys distributed as follows:

    • Posidonia signaling buoys that delimit the area where anchoring is prohibited. These are yellow, large, and have a cross. Outside the delimited area, anchoring is allowed.
    • Blue buoys for recreational boats located in the posidonia area.
    • Yellow buoys for dive center boats that can be used if no center is moored. For shared use whenever space allows.

The mooring buoys are managed by the Cala Montgó operator. As a result of the collaboration agreement with the Clubs of L’Escala and Estartit, the operator applies a special price to its services for members and users of the Annual and Season Forfaits will be able to enjoy this discount. To get it applied, request your Club digital member card to be able to identify yourself through the Club App.

During summer months, the Montgrí, Medes Islands and Baix Ter Natural Park install buoys in Calas Ferriol, Pedrosa and Falaguer to regulate anchoring in these areas. The use of these buoys will be allowed between sunrise and sunset and their distribution is as follows:

    • Posidonia signaling buoys. These are yellow, large, and have a cross. Outside the delimited area, anchoring is allowed.
    • Free blue buoys available for boats up to 9 meters located within the posidonia area.
    • Yellow buoy for dive center boats that can be used if there is no moored center. Shared use whenever space allows.

More information

Between the months of April and October, the surveillance and collection service for mooring buoys in the Medes Islands is active. The area offers red or orange and white payment buoys for private users that can be contracted annually or on an occasional basis.

Other conditions:

    • The annual modality does not guarantee the use of the buoy. The anchoring will be conditioned to the availability of buoys at the time.
    • You can only moor one boat per buoy, except for the months of July and August, during which a maximum of two boats per buoy will be allowed.
    • It is not allowed to spend the night in the reserve.
