The Club Nàutic L’Escala will host the 2023 Spanish Optimist Championship between April 1 and 9. The regatta has been presented today, Thursday March 16 at 12 noon in the Assembly Hall of the L’Escala Town Hall, starting the countdown of an event that will have the participation of 150 young sailors from 18 Spanish regions.

The event included the interventions of Marta Rodeja, Deputy Mayor and Councilor for Treasury, Economic and Tourist Promotion, Commerce, Communication and New Technologies of the Town Council of L’Escala; Gerard Marín, Commodore of Club Nàutic l’Escala; Josep Maria Isern, Vice-President of the Catalan Sailing Federation; Pere Vila, General Manager of Ports of the Generalitat and Josep Bofill, Mayor of l’Escala.

The Club’s sports director Xavi López has offered the details of the upcoming 2023 Spanish Optimist Championship, a class for sailors between 7 and 16 years old in which the world’s most renowned sailors have started.

A feminine event

The competition, which will qualify for the class World Championship, will take place between April 4 and 9 and will include a preparatory regatta on days 1 and 2, the XV Costa Brava Sailing Meeting. It also presents an important novelty, since, following the indications of the Consejo Superior de Deportes, it will be the first national Optimist competition in which the male and female classifications will be separated with the aim of giving greater visibility to the girls of the fleet. The regatta’s social program will also include a conference aimed at raising awareness among athletes about inequalities in the world of sport, offering tools to technical teams and empowering athletes as future leaders.

Sustainable event

Another of the pillars of the event will be sustainability. The Spanish Optimist Championship opts for the platinum seal of the Sailors for the Sea Clean Regattas program, which awards the sustainability of the events that have taken place in the water since 2006. In this sense, the Club has developed four lines of action to minimize the impact of the race on the natural environment. These are proper waste management, responsible water consumption, preventing the entry of toxins into the sea and organizing a cleanup of the coast.

Social event

In its social aspect, the regatta will be integrated into the Community Service Project of the IES El Pedró de l’Escala, thus linking the event even more to the territory. By virtue of this project, a group of students from the high school will participate as volunteers in the organization of the regatta, which will allow them to broaden their learning in the active exercise of citizenship, as well as put their knowledge and skills at stake at the service of the community.

The championship is organized by the Club Nàutic l’Escala by delegation of the Royal Spanish Sailing Federation with the collaboration of the Catalan Sailing Federation and the Spanish Association of the International Optimist Class and the sponsorship of the L’Escala Town Council, Diputación de Girona, the Costa Brava Girona Tourist Board, Repsol and Bonpreu – Esclat.

It also receives the support from the General Secretariat for Sport and Physical Activity of the Generalitatde Catalunya, Ports de la Generalitat, Nautivela, Intermar Sailing, Camping La Ballena Alegre, Vacances Costa Brava, L’Escala Resort and Hotel Nieves Mar.
