Club Nàutic L’Escala successfully concluded this Saturday the Moth Test Event 1 – Moth Costa Brava Training Camp 2026, an event initially scheduled from 10 to 11 April and included in the preparation programme for the International Moth European Championship 2026, which will take place from 7 to 13 June in the waters of the Gulf of Empúries.
This first event served to assess the race area, sailing conditions and organisational setup ahead of the European Championship, while also offering participants training sessions under real competition conditions. On-water activity ran smoothly until Saturday afternoon, when the event concluded with the official prize-giving ceremony followed by a social gathering at the Club’s facilities.
Test Event One welcomed seven sailors from different backgrounds, including international competitors from the United Kingdom, France and Argentina, as well as local sailors. All of them are specialists in the International Moth class, one of the most technologically advanced and demanding disciplines in modern dinghy sailing.
Moth boats, equipped with foils, lift the hull above the water and reach high speeds, turning each training session into a true high-performance sailing laboratory.
Regarding sailing conditions, Friday allowed the first training sessions to take place in a favourable scenario, setting a positive tone for the Test Event. On Saturday, the race area recorded steady winds between 9 and 11 knots, with a direction ranging from 90 to 100 degrees—optimal conditions that enabled the scheduled training programme to continue as planned.
Daily activity began each morning with a skippers’ meeting, where impressions were shared and the sailing plan was defined. On-water training sessions mainly took place between midday and early afternoon, taking advantage of the best wind conditions.
The Moth Test Event 1 concluded with a recognition ceremony for the participants, during which they received a jar of L’Escala anchovies, an emblematic local product from Anxoves Solés, bringing several intense days of training to a close.
With the organisation of this first Test Event, Club Nàutic L’Escala takes a firm step forward in the preparation of the Moth European Championship, a top-level international competition that will bring together the best sailors on the continent and further establish L’Escala and the Costa Brava as a benchmark for high-performance sailing.
The 2026 Moth European Championship will be organised by Club Nàutic L’Escala and the Moth Class, with the endorsement of the Catalan Sailing Federation and the Royal Spanish Sailing Federation.
The event is supported by the Town Council of L’Escala, the Girona Provincial Council, the Costa Brava Tourism Board and the Secretariat-General for Sport of the Government of Catalonia, with collaboration from Hyundai Fornells Motor, Càmping la Ballena Alegre, the Consejo Superior de Deportes, Ports de la Generalitat, Nautivela and Sant Miquel.
