For safe sailing, it’s very important to prevent crew members from falling into the water. Rescuing them may be complicated by unfavourable sea conditions or a lack of experience in performing rescue procedures.

Below we provide you with some general tips on how to prevent this situation from occurring. However, we should always pay special attention to children, inexpert sailors and seasick passengers who are less capable of maintaining their balance.

Wear proper, slip resistant footwear so as to avoid slipping.

Don’t walk on the glass covers of the hatches. When they are wet, they are very slippery.

Keep the deck tidy, properly stowing ropes and objects on board so as not to trip over them.

Avoid routes that cause the boat to heel, especially if there are people walking on deck.

When using harnesses and horizontal lifeline systems, make sure that they can support the weight of the person overboard.

Wearing a life jacket may make the difference between life and death. If a person wearing a life jacket falls overboard, they will float on the surface, increasing their chances of being seen. If they are unconscious, the life jacket will keep their respiratory system afloat and above water at all times.
