The impact of toxic substances on the marine environment is one of the most severe, and therefore one of the most important to prevent. The most common example is the spillage of fuel.

Precautions to follow in order to avoid it:

  • Regularly check that there are no fuel or oil leaks in your vessel.
  • When refuelling, make sure the tank does not overflow and that the hose does not come out of the tank.
  • Protect the area around the tank connection with paper towels or rags to prevent splashing or spilling into the water.  Paper towels or rags must be disposed of properly.
  • Directly notify port staff of any spillages within the port facilities. For spillages outside the port, please call the emergency telephone number 112.
