L’Escala and L’Estartit, the setting for Phase 2 of the XXIV Interclubs Empordà

This past weekend, the XXIV Interclubs Empordà Regatta held its second phase, connecting the ports of L’Escala and L’Estartit on October 11 and 12. The event brought together around thirty cruising boats and crews from 10 yacht clubs, consolidating the regatta as a meeting point for cruising sailing on the Costa Brava and Northern Catalonia.

Friday 10: Science and the sea take center stage in L’Escala

The weekend began with a valuable cultural activity: the screening of the documentary “Memòries d’un mar,” produced by Mileva Films, as part of the Club Nàutic l’Escala’s Conference Series. The documentary, dedicated to the Aral Sea and the impact of climate change, featured the presence of director Laura Carrau and a scientist from the expedition, who shared with the audience the importance of preserving marine ecosystems. This production was recognized with the 2024 Award for Best Scientific Communication Project and an Honorable Mention at the Prismas Casa de las Ciencias Awards, the most prestigious science communication prize in Spain. This initiative highlights the Club’s commitment to outreach and environmental awareness, bringing science closer to the nautical and local community.

Saturday 11: L’Escala, history, nature, and two challenging races

The second phase of the Interclubs Empordà started in L’Escala, a privileged setting between the Montgrí Natural Park, the Medes Islands, and the Baix Ter. After a traditional breakfast at Bol Roig and the drawing for the Jotun – Varador l’Escala Prize, the fleet competed in two coastal races marked by variable winds: the first with a tramuntana that faded away, and the second with a 12-knot gregal, which dropped as the boats approached L’Estartit. This day also counted towards the Ruta de l’Anxova, which celebrates the maritime and gastronomic traditions of the area. The afternoon ended with the Interclubs Empordà Meeting Point, strengthening camaraderie among clubs.

Sunday 12: L’Estartit, protected nature and high-level racing

On Sunday, with the Medes Islands as a backdrop, the fleet enjoyed a traditional breakfast at the Club Nàutic Estartit’s clubhouse before competing in two more races, with gregal winds from 6 to 15 knots ensuring agile and competitive sailing. The Varador de l’Estartit prize draw and the quick publication of results brought this phase to a close, marked by strong participation and a great club atmosphere.

Sporting results

After the second phase, the provisional standings place L’Oreig (CN Port d’Aro) at the top of the ORC 1 class, followed by Chaman J (CN Banyuls) and Aquilon (CV Golfus). In ORC 2, Enjolit (CN CB Vela Palamós) leads, followed by Manu Tercer (CNCB Vela Palamós) and Cuzco (YCAR).
