Solar Eclipse from the Sea: Safety Recommendations

On 12 August, the skies over Empordà will host an exceptional astronomical event. From the Alt Empordà area, it will be possible to observe a major partial solar eclipse, with the Moon covering nearly 99% of the Sun’s disk at maximum coverage. The eclipse will begin at around 7:33 pm and reach its peak at 8:27 pm, almost coinciding with sunset.

To mark this event, the Spanish General Directorate of the Merchant Marine (DGMM) has published a safety campaign with specific recommendations for recreational boats heading out to sea to observe the eclipse.

For many sailors, watching this phenomenon from the sea will be a unique experience. The combination of sunset, the Sea of Empúries and the eclipse promises a truly unforgettable sight. However, eclipse observation should never compromise navigational safety.

A privileged observation point from the sea

As the Sun will be very low on the horizon, having a clear view towards the west and west-northwest will be particularly important.

Some elevated areas around L’Escala may also offer excellent viewing conditions. In any case, ensuring an unobstructed view during the final minutes before sunset will be essential.

Safety recommendations for recreational boats

The DGMM has issued a number of specific recommendations for recreational vessels during the eclipse.

If you plan to go out on the water:

Maintain a constant lookout at all times.
Whenever possible, have someone other than the skipper observe the eclipse.
Keep a safe distance from other vessels.
Remember that eclipse watching should never distract from navigation.

Higher boat traffic and reduced visibility are expected during the event, so extra caution is advised.

Protect your eyesight

It is important to remember that the eclipse will not be total in Alt Empordà, meaning that the Sun must never be viewed directly without adequate protection.

To observe the eclipse safely:

Use only certified solar viewing glasses.
Do not use ordinary sunglasses.
Do not use improvised methods such as X-rays, smoked glass or CDs.
Never observe the Sun through binoculars, telescopes or cameras without certified solar filters.

A different way to experience the sea

The eclipse on 12 August will provide a unique opportunity to enjoy the Sea of Empúries from a different perspective. If you decide to observe it from the water, do so responsibly, respecting navigation rules and always putting safety first.
