MedFoto kicks off with the publication of the rules for a new edition today, Thursday 1 February. The International Photography Contest of the Mediterranean co-organised by Alive Foundation and the Club Nàutic L’Escala is launching a new edition with the aim of continuing to grow in its mission to contribute to the knowledge and preservation of the marine environment through photography.

Both professional and amateur photographers can now check the rules of the competition, which is open to all lovers of photography and also in terms of subject matter. MedFoto offers up to eight different categories covering the Mediterranean Sea and its relationship with people from all points of view.

These are Landscape, Wildlife, Sports and Leisure, Sea Trades, Underwater, Conservation and Climate Change, With Mobile and Story. These include the sections With Mobile, for images taken with a mobile phone, and Photographic Story, which was opened in 2023 with the aim of rewarding the best photographic work made up of six images that deal with one of the themes of the competition.

All the photographs can be submitted between 1 April and 15 May via the MedFoto website (www.medfoto.org) and are eligible for one of the prizes in the competition. This year, MedFoto will once again award nearly 4,000 euros in cash prizes to be distributed among the overall winner, the winners in each of the categories and three special prizes. The best images taken within the geographical boundaries of the Costa Brava and L’Escala will be recognised, as well as those that receive the most “Likes” on the contest’s Instagram account between 1st and 10th July thanks to the Popular Vote’s award.

The decision will be made by a jury of experts in the world of photography and the marine environment, which this year crosses borders for the first time. The committee has been renewed with the incorporation of the Italian photographer Ugo Mellone, the Basque biologist and photographer Isabel Díez and the winner of last year’s competition, Marc Marco. Laura Carrau, Oriol Alamany and Xavier Salvador complete the jury.

The winners will be unveiled during a ceremony that will take place on Saturday 27 July at the Club Nàutic L’Escala. The ceremony will also serve to inaugurate the exhibition of the winning and finalist photographs of the fourth edition of MedFoto, which will be available to be visited in the Board Room of the L’Escala sports association until 8 September.
